New survey assesses the technology needs of small and medium-sized publishers

Maverick and Scholastica have partnered on a global survey, Technology Needs of Small and Medium Journal Publishers. The survey runs through June 5th and can be completed at the link below.

The survey takes only a few minutes to complete, and the results will be compiled into an openly available report (no download form required). Its purpose is to gather insights into the digital tools and workflow optimizations that would best serve the smaller publishing community for its members and the infrastructural and service providers who support them.

Survey Details

For the purposes of this survey, a “small-to-medium-sized publisher” is defined as a publishing organization with under 1,000 employees (per the Gartner SmB criteria).

We welcome survey responses from those who work with publishers across academic disciplines that meet the above “small-to-medium-sized” criteria — whether you are part of a scholarly society, university press, independent press, research institute, library, or faculty/campus-based journal program.

The survey questions span the following core areas:

  • Platform and workflow management
  • Research integrity and the rise of AI
  • Vendor collaboration and support

The findings will be published in a free open report in an aggregated and anonymized format. Contact information is optional and will not be shared with outside parties or used for purposes other than those stated in the survey (to receive a copy of the report). For more details, see Scholastica blog.

The survey is a complement to the 2025 SSP Conference session, “What smaller publishers need from tech vendors to level up,” which was submitted by members of the Scholastica team and will be moderated by Maverick Senior Associate, Rebecca Rinehart.

Maverick and Scholastica plan to share preliminary survey findings at SSP. Follow Maverick on Bluesky and LinkedIn and Scholastica on Bluesky and LinkedIn for updates about the SSP session as they become available throughout the spring.
