Peer review and workflow for a society membership magazine

A medical society that publishes an award-winning monthly news magazine for its members sought to institute a more formal expert review process that would work in conjunction with its existing editorial process. The new process would create a structure and workflow with checks to ensure quality control.

GOALS

The goal was to ensure the scientific accuracy of the content and consistency with other association publications while also allowing the timely publication of current information within a structured review process.

APPROACH

The current workflow was documented along with schedules, timelines, and roles and responsibilities of staff and reviewers. A revised workflow that followed a consistent process and incorporated expert reviews at different stages of the process was proposed. An editorial structure featuring an oversight position and advisory board of expert reviewers was outlined along with position descriptions and recruitment strategies.

RESULTS

The proposed structure was developed in close collaboration with staff to ensure it was manageable and helpful in expediting content creation and publication. The results were then presented to staff and management and plans are underway for implementation.
